Daily Transmission #35: Fairy Warrior

It’s a lazy Saturday, so why not color something!

This is the Fairy Warrior, a character I created for Power Pencils and originally intended to be part of the Pencil of Stories ornament set, but I ran out of time to make the ornament. He has a backstory that I may get to at some other time. Or maybe you can tell me his story.

Want to color your own? Here’s a black and white version.

Click to make it big, print it out and color as you wish. I’d love to see your finished product. Send me the results: Dan@PowerPencils.com.

Happy Saturday!

Making a Christmas Tree Story

img_1281As a kid, three of my favorite Christmas tree ornaments were: A wooden castle, a small wooden sled and a wooden airplane with a tiny propeller that spun if you flicked it just right. I would meticulously hang the ornaments on the tree so that it told a story…in my mind. The plane was hung towards the top of the tree, because planes fly. The castle was placed in the middle because it was built on an a hill (or a cloud). And the sled was hung towards the bottom. The story would change from year-to-year, or day-to-day, but essentially a hero would fly to the castle, do something heroic, and then escape on the sled in a dizzying action scene that Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg would be hard-pressed to recreate in a movie. Imagine the speeder bike chase from Return of the Jedi mixed with Die Hard and seasoned with the first twenty minutes of Temple of Doom.

Those three ornaments were lost somewhere, but I still create stories for my Christmas tree. Glass balls are planets, metal snowflakes become magic portals, the spaceship is…well, a spaceship.

The idea of creating Christmas tree stories was part of the inspiration for the new Pencil of Stories. This Power Pencil comes with six wooden ornaments that (may) spring to life as you use the magic pencil to tell tales of adventure and pterodactyls. What’s the story behind the girl, the yeti, the jetpack werewolf and the goblins? You tell me.

I may have lost my wooden airplane, castle, and sled, but I can replace them with new ornaments. The story continues!

The Pencil of Stories and all six ornaments (and a Goblin pencil!) are available now as one set! Click here to visit the store and start writing new, weird, wonderful stories!

Holiday Signs In Frame

The Jetpack Werewolf ornament sold out rather quickly. For details on the (slight) possibility that more can be made, click here.

Power Pencils are the perfect present!

But enough about that, it’s Twilight time!

This book is (slowly) coming to a close and that gives us time to reflect on why this book exists. The gender-swap idea isn’t paying off in any real or interesting way. It’s more of an Instagram filter than a thought-provoking study on society.

Case in point: In this chapter, after escaping from Archie and Jessamine, Beau takes a cab to his house. In the original book, the cab driver was a man. In this version…she’s a woman! Continue reading

Lego Advent Calendar: Day 5

If you’re interested in ordering a Personalized Power Pencil (with your name or the name of someone worthy of amazing presents etched into it), the deadline for orders is today! Though I won’t get a chance to etch them until next week, so the REAL deadline is Monday December 8th. But that’s it. If you don’t get your order in by Monday, your holiday will be ruined.

Personalized Power Pencils look like this:

There is still time to order the holiday set of Power Pencils (all 7 Power Pencils plus a carrying case), but supplies are limited and going fast. You can also get the Stocking Stuffer set of 5 Wish Pencils! (Deadline for Christmas orders is December 16th.)

Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your Grandma who, unless she knows you want magic pencils, will give you another dumb set of smelly crap from Bath and Body Works — which despite smelling lovely cannot grant wishes or summon dragons.

Order now!

Enough of the self-promotion. Let’s rip open a calendar!

Lego Advent Calendar: Day 3

Some may argue that Star Wars has nothing to do with Christmas or the Holiday Season. I disagree. While there is no overt mention of Christmas in the trilogies, Star Wars feels Christmas-y. It belongs on that list of other movies/stories that, while having no genuine connection with the holidays, are still associated with December.

These movies include:

The Wizard of Oz
Harry Potter
The Lord of the Rings movies
The Godfather (1 and 2)
And a few of the Pixar films (The Incredibles, Toy Story, Toy Story 2)

Some of these holiday associations are caused because the movie was released around December, and The Godfather saga is all about family…so that might make sense. For whatever reason, I consider these December things. Maybe it’s because of the magic and spectacle. Maybe it’s because these are the things cable channels shove down our eye-throats this month. But Star Wars is a Christmas movie, whereas Raiders of the Lost Ark is a summer movie because it looks warm and makes me thirsty.

And Hoth is the North Pole.

This is not open for debate.

Today’s item is very cool and complicated. Here’s what the parts look like.

With a little Christmas magic and frustration these turn into…

Power Pencils Launch!

My brand new business and brand new website for my brand new line of products has launched!

PowerPencils.com!!!

These are magical pencils that are loaded with super powers. There will be a new pencil with a new power every month. The wooden pencils ar etched with magical markings and words. They are fantastic!

The first pencil is the Pencil of Desire. Whatever you write with this pencil will come true!

Next month’s Power Pencil will have it’s own design and power. I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but it’s going to be awesome.

PowerPencils.com took about a year to get off the ground. The original idea went through many, many stages and it was six months before I finally figured out how to make the actual pencils. Then it took a whole bunch of months fine-tuning that process. I learned so much about all kinds of things! And now I’m ready to make magic pencils!

I’m so excited about this! And the Pencil of Desire is literally and figuratively just the beginning! As I continue to master the art of making fun products, I’ll be releasing more and more stuff!

Laser Farm will continue to operate as my main, personal webzone. And it’s here that you’ll find the usually wonderfulness and Lego Advent Calendar blogs. But now I have two websites! And one of those websites sells magic pencils!!!

Thank you! Now go enchant your words!

Love,
Dan
